Emotional Affair Support Group
As a result of the large percentage of women in the work force, and the rise of the Internet, Emotional Affairs have become a much more common occurrence in modern life. An emotional affair occurs when one member of a relationship consistently turns to someone else for their core, primary emotional support in life. It often develops slowly, even innocently, as a friendship with a co-worker or friend. There may or may not be a romantic/sexual attraction initially accompanying this budding friendship. But when the primary relationship is experiencing ongoing hostility, conflict and/or distance, and one member of the relationship pulls away from their partner and consistently turns to their 'friend' for companionship, support and sharing of deep personal material, an emotional affair has begun.
Because of the prevalence of these type of relationships, and the ambiguity, confusions and questions they elicit in all parties involved, the Relationship Institute has created a weekly support group for anyone involved in an Emotional Affair: whether you yourself are in the relationship, or your partner/spouse is. Each of you need support and guidance to understand the intense feelings these types of relationships can engender, and to make the healthiest decisions regarding your primary relationship.
The group takes place on a national telephone bridge line, with supportive materials emailed to all participants. The fee for the group is $25 per week; the group meets on Thursday nights at 9 pm Eastern, 8 pm Central, 7 pm Mountain and 6 pm Pacific time.
Topics covered in the group include:
-
warning signs of emotional affairs
-
how to confront your partner if you suspect an emotional affair
-
best forms of help for you and your partner
-
how to extricate yourself from an emotional affair that has gotten out of control
-
how to set healthy boundaries with co-workers
-
best practices to reduce the possibility of an emotional affair developing in your life or the life of your partner
